How an RFID attendance tracking system works
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) attendance tracking systems have been around for a while. They work on the same principle as a pet’s microchip where the vet uses a reader to view the information contained on the chip.
Like a pet’s microchip the swipe card or key fob an employee carries for clocking in and out is a passive transponder which comprises a microchip with unique information stored on it, and an antenna. When the swipe cards or fobs pick up the signal from the clocking in terminal (reader) the information is passed over. The exchange of data between clocking terminals and cards or fobs generally only occurs within a close radius (or proximity) of each other.
RFID terminals are often used as a no-touch clocking option particularly in manufacturing environments.
One downside of an RFID attendance tracking system is employees losing their cards or key fobs which can be irritating and costly.
Another is that the system is open to buddy clocking where employees clock in and out for each other. An extreme example recently was a video released by Italian police showing a public sector worker with a cardboard box over his head trying to evade detection from the CCTV recording him, whilst using a fistful of swipe cards to clock various colleagues in and out!
If you require a no-touch clocking system you may want to consider facial recognition biometric clocking. The uAttend MN2000 biometric facial recognition terminal is an alternative to RFID clocking. An added advantage is that it prevents buddy clocking.
